I’m Jonas,


Afficionado of alternative economies, human rights, non-human collaborations and homemade pizza.I’m also an architect. Sometimes an educator, sometimes an artist. But mostly an architect who believes that our spaces should bring us closer to each other and nature, rather than further away&#38;nbsp;

Other than that:
I’m a Norwegian-Iranian, currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark and working as an architect and project manager at Emergency Architecture and Human Rights

	Practice
The world is changing, and so is the role of the architect. Once seen as a discipline of form and function, architecture is now entangled with material scarcity, climate adaptation, and ecological responsibility. The architect of the Anthropocene must be a problem solver—armed with a
multidisciplinary toolbox that extends beyond aesthetics to historical analysis, anthropology, material science, and regenerative design.&#38;nbsp;

At the heart of my work are materials—their origins, transformations, and afterlives. I explore circular design strategies, experimental biocomposite materials, biodegradability, and material reuse to question how architecture can contribute to regenerative cycles rather than depletion.&#38;nbsp;

My practice is rooted in hands-on experimentation and a generative process - Prototyping, model-making, and  material testing allow ideas to evolve dynamically, rather than being confined to theory and the screen. 

The Greek root of “ecosystem,” oikos, means “home.” To build responsibly, we must understand all the elements that shape that home—human and more-than-human alike. As architects, we have an opportunity to rethink our practice, embracing new methodologies that regenerate rather than exhaust, that contribute rather than extract. The transition to a new way of building is not just possible; it is necessary.

Skovtrappen is a project exploring new ways to revitalize villages like Bedsted by combining radical conservation practices with storytelling that connects to the village’s history. The half-demolished ruin of an old doctor’s house is transformed into multi-leveled overgrown park that invites the local forest into the city center, while simoultaneously keeping the spatial memory of the doctor’s house alive. 90% of the materials came from within 1 km of the site, and all the concrete slabs were misproductions donated by the local concrete factory. Design and project lead was architect Mo Michelsen Stocholm Krag. Emergency Architecture (including me) provided architectural support and a lot of manual labour.

Skovtrappen keeps evolving in the custody of the local community as it adapts and forms to their uses and needs.&#38;nbsp;

BackgroundJust like many other Danish towns, the small station city of Bedsted Thy is suffering from an increase in rural to urban migration. Centralisation of services, a decline in work opportunities and a loss of tourism has pushed many residents to move closer to the bigger cities - leaving behind many empty buildings. Some of which become dangerous as they decline, and a mark of shame for the local residents.Traditionally, the choice has been between expensive and continous renovation or state sponsored demolitions. Naturally this approach has led to an increase in empty plots in the middle of town, erasing local heritage and reducing overall quality of the space. Not to mention the issues of wastefulness and sustainability.

Local support and co-creationThe support and sense of ownership of the local city renewal organisation proved essential to the project. They assisted with tools, expertise, various machinery, and a lot of snacks for us construction workers. They also took over the project the moment we looked away, and added trees, bushes, a very well designed handrail and some benches. Skovtrappen was wholeheartedly adopted and added to by the local community, which is the biggest compliment we could receive.

Historical audiowalkDuring the project, local stories were collected and presented in the form of a prototype audiowalk around the town, allowing residents and visitors to interact with the stories through QR-codes placed around town. I was the main researcher, writer, sound designer and editor of the audiowalk, with gracious support from Nanna Hauge Kristensen. The audiowalk can be found here

Drawing competitionAs part of a larger overarching experiment in Bedsted, called Utopia Thy, we organised a drawing competition for the kids at the local school, asking them to imagine their town as a forest city. Forest playgrounds, ice cream stalls, sensual gardens, nature museum, duck ponds, treetop camping and of course a water-themed obstacle course for forest monsters. The entries bristle with joy and imagination, and inspire our work within Utopia Thy going forward. The winner was the idea of a nature museum in the old abandoned station building - a building we hope to be working with in future projects.&#38;nbsp;

Copenhagen is a city much revered for its architecture, urban planning, and liveability. Yet, if one begins to scratch the surface of this rosy red image, another Copenhagen is revealed, leading much to be desired: Hostile design targeting the homeless and most vulnerable populations; personal storage facilities popping up and taking over large areas of the city in the midst of a housing crisis; and diverse, alternative living situations being shut down to make way for the gentrified, globalised and monotonous;&#38;nbsp;
In the summer of 2023, the UIA World Congress of Architecture was held in Copenhagen. Afterwards they released a utopic document called the “10 Copenhagen Lessons”. Much like the Sustainable Development Goals, they are hard to disagree with. Who do not want “Dignity and agency for all people”? Or think that carbon capture shouldn’t exceed carbon footprint? But in practice, all the good intentions in the world are often expressed very differently.&#38;nbsp;
Wonderful Copenhack is a playful counternarrative to these utopic Copenhagen Lessons, and the idea that the Danish Capital is without fault.&#38;nbsp;
I’ve been personally involved in all the projects presented below, as an architect, researcher, educator and carpenter.

Satirical mapping of Copenhagen, that shed light on urban inequality and hostile design. Doubles as the “Copenhack Lessons”. Printed as foldable maps mimicking the official tourist maps of Copenhagen, and distributed to bars, libraries and transportation hubs across the city.

is a non-profit organisation employing spatial tools to fight inequality in the built environment. The team consists of both 
architects, anthropologists, and social scientists, which is reflected in their interdisciplinary approach and innovative projects all over the world. Their projects span broadly: from schools in Syrian refugee camps, to earthquake-proof cultural centres in Nepal, and citisen engagement in impoverished neighbourhoods in Denmark.

In this age of the anthropocene it is more important than ever that we understand and reduce the impact of our work, if we are to avoid ecological collapse. It is well known, but not sufficiently acted upon. Not due to a lack of knowledge or ability, but a lack of empathy with and deep understanding of natural ecosystems.
I was invited by the organisers of the
Sikon 35 architecture student festival to share my working process of working with and learning from non-human perspectives by teaching a 3-day workshop.

Based on my work with fungi and corals, the role of the architect in the Anthropocene was critically explored from non-human perspectives, through experimental writing and empathetic exercises. From there some design principles based on the pattern languages of architect Christopher Alexander were created. These can serve as guidelines for how to design spaces for the non-human, as well as design alternative spaces for the human, or to design shared spaces for both. The results of the workshop were exhibited next to the results of the other workshops of the festival in the ruins of the old boiler room building in Kintai - a fitting location to discuss the unnecessary struggle between the human and the non-human

The Aukstumala swamp 
is one of the largest wetlands in Lithuania, covering an area of almost 2,500 hectares. Swamps and wetlands [peat bogs] are the most effective carbon sinks on the planet, holding about 42% of all stored soil carbon, even if they only cover around 3% of Earth’s land surface. They are important ecosystems for birds and insects, and are sources of clean drinking water across the world.
Due to their wet, anaerobic conditions they have an incredibly slow decomposition rate, which means they also function as biological archives. Layers of compressed biomass [mostly sphagnum moss] can be extracted and researched to determine the exact climatic conditions they grew in, and eerily well preserved human remains buried deep within the bog can reveal fascinating details of life in times thousands of years away.

Workshop outline:
1. After lectures by activists on the importance of swamp ecosystems the students explored the Aukstumala swamp, and brought back with them a small item. A flower, a dead branch, a handful of seeds, a rock, some moss, a botttle of water, etc.2. Through playful, informal, associative, experimetal and collaborative writing and drawing exercises the objects were explored. All tasks were done on rolls of tracing paper.3. The objects were described in evocative imagery, until an idea of their mode of operation and relationships to their surroundings were gained.4. Based on this understanding the objects were asked to describe us, and react to our descriptions of them. 5. After meditative exercises based on buddhist meditations and method acting techniques the objects were interviewed by each other.6. Based on their answers a series of patterns were extracted.7. The results were exhibited above voids in the boiler building, to emulate the Akivarai of the swamp.

Sadly, the Aukstumala swamp is being drained and the peat is extracted and used for fuel and as potting soil in agriculture, which releases all the stored carbon and ruins the fragile ecosystems. Since the 1820’s more than half of the swamp has been drained, and groups of activists have done what they can to stop further extraction. Most successful is a simple, non-intrusive “education trail” that allows visitors to move deep into the swamp without damaging it, while also building a sense of ownership to the area.

Fungi is the essential infrastructure of healthy ecosystems. They deconstruct dead matter, recycle, collaborate with the plants and animals around them and redistribute the available resources so that the entire ecosystem may thrive.


Interdisciplinary research into human production of trash and fungi in their natural ecosystems generated five topics of interest that were thus explored non-linearly through a process of making, re-making, and fungal modes of exploration. 
The project unfolded (and keeps unfolding) gradually, expanding outwards in all directions with no clear end goal other than building strong relationships of mutual benefit to the living and non-living entities it encountered.


This approach transmuted trash into opportunities, generated multispecies spaces and initiated conversations and collaborations with companies working within circularity, food production, unconventional materials and even accounting.

It cleaned mental clutter in a Swedish forest, dived into numerous waste containers and produced over 1.2 tons of a biomaterial made from only cellulose rich industrial waste and fungi.

Resource management (waste)
The global phenomena and challenge of waste is common knowledge. Pictures of slums overflowing with trash, rivers polluted by toxic chemicals or dead animals full of cigarette buds and colorful pieces of plastic are commonplace. Well known is the threat of rapid climate change and the mass extinction of plant and animal life. So is the fact that humanity’s industrialized, capitalistic, extractivist and consumerist practices are to blame. At humanity’s current rate of waste production and its slow rate of change, the future looks destined for ecological (and human) collapse, which is why this project aims to learn better resource management from the non-human rather than the human.

Fungi
The greatest recyclers and resource managers on the planet are the members of the fungal kingdom. Without them, organic matter would just be piling up and humanity would live in strange coral reef-like structures of dead trees and other organic waste just laying around in piles. Because of fungi, waste does not exist in nature.


Fungi are a varied group of species. Some break down and recycle dead organic matter so that their constituent nutrients are ready to be reused once more, while others collaborate with the species around them to ensure the resources are distributed well, such that the entire ecosystem may thrive. They do so by connecting to the roots of plants, aiding their search for nutrients, but also to let them communicate with other plants through their underground fungal network.There are fungi that live in between skin/plant cells and in digestive systems, essentially cohabiting space with their hosts and doing everything they can to protect them from external threats, and there are even fungi that break down living organic matter, effectively testing the resilience of the ecosystem and training it to evolve.

The success of fungal ecosystems become evident when looking at their 850 million year old history of sustainably thriving, expanding and collaborating, as opposed to humanity’s meager 250 thousand (of which the last 10 000 years have been increasingly devastating to the planet).

The Underground Process

Early anthropological research into the ways humans produce and deal with waste combined with research into fungal behaviors and roles within their ecosystems provided the foundation that the project grew from. From this early research five widely different topics of interest were generated, that were then explored concurrently following a specific set of rules based on fungal modes of exploration:

The five topics:
Fungi as process - Can fungal roles and behaviors within natural ecosystems be translated into a guide for how to interact with materials and one’s surroundings? What kinds of discussions/suggestions/alternatives would such a guide generate?Fungi as material - Can bio-based materials made with industrial waste and fungi become a viable alternative to current non-recyclable and non-biodegradable materials? What are the opportunities for producing such materials at and around BAS?Fungal landscapes - Do fungal spaces have something to teach us about the way we organize our spaces? We know what a Roman/Modernist/Aztec/etc. doorway looks like, but what about a fungal doorway?Fungal meditations - Can we learn to think like fungi? Can exercises of extreme empathy with the non-human teach us to be better custodians of our resources?Homo Mycologicus (the human acutely aware of fungi) - What would it mean to live more attuned to the microbiome of the human body (on the skin and in the gut), and help it thrive for the benefit of both entities? Could learning to share our bodies with the non-human make us better material managers?

Provisional results of the Underground ProcessTranslating fungal roles and behaviors within natural ecosystems into principles for resource/material management and how to approach the world, opened up interesting discussions on co-production, cooperative ownership, co-housing, diversification of society, self-organization, deregulation/re-regulation of economies and the need for a circular economy.The properties of composite mycelium materials were explored by combining local waste materials (leaves, textiles, asfalt, sand, gypsum, metal, a broken umbrella, cardboard, etc.) and mycelium (the root system of fungi) as a binder. This material has great acoustical, insulation, and fire resistant properties. It is non-toxic, odorless, fully compostable, lightweight and durable. If treated right, individual pieces can fuse together, eliminating the need for mortar or screws, which also makes decomposition easier at the end of its lifecycle. During the project the material was explored, experimented with, and shaped into bricks, bowls, acoustical plates, large scale structures and lampshades.About 1.2 tonnes of Spent Mushroom Substrate, a waste product of the aforementioned mushroom farm, was successfully used in building large mycelium structures. As far as the literature goes, it's an innovation of the project.A strong, translucent, biobased leather-like material was produced as a byproduct of Kombucha, a fermented tea that is beneficial for human gut health.Edible oyster mushrooms was grown from non-recyclable cardboard waste.Empathetic exercises and meditation experiments led to the creation of fungal design principles used to shape the exhibition space.Experiments in improving the human microbiome led to a stronger immune system and healthier lifestyle based on fermented foods and cold showers, which support all other processes.Experiments in meditation and cleaning information junk from the mind proved to improve focus, mental capacity, better sleep and less stress, which also supports all other processes.And an understanding of resource management, both intuitive and technical, is deepening

Building Interfaces
	
	
Building Interfaces is the result of a semester-long collaborative research project, in which 14 students worked together to map out and explore potential interventions on multiple scales at the Bergen School of Architecture. 


Through the lenses of Material Ecology, Critical Spatial Practice and Social Infrastructure the school building was thoroughly analyzed, while proposals were made through the lenses of abundance and frugality.

Thorough mapping, research visits, numerous proposals, and an absurd amount of discussions laid the foundation for the final suggestions which include a redevelopment of the Waterfront, the Main Hall and a Manual for Storage that address the entire school building.  


The following examples are parts of the book which I have been actively involved in, and as the project is stil underway (estimated until the end of 2024), I will only scratch the surface of its contents. 
Unless otherwise stated all the following work is made by me, like these posters which explain the basic process of the course:

The Living Archive Individual proposal for how the layers of history at BAS can be visualized using materials saved from demolished barracks in the Main Hall. An early storage/gallery proposal that changes shape with every object removed or added, and allows for sitting on all surfaces. The wide variety of options leans towards universal design, as it allows for multiple usergroups to find comfortable positions within the structure. 


Reinventing storage
Through group work on the topic of storage and radical reuse of materials, these four proposals were generated. Trash was mapped, spaces were reorganised, and schoolwide collective cleaning sessions were arranged. I took responsibility for the first proposal (01_Verticality/circularity), but all of them were done in collaboration.

A manual for storage at BAS

A comprehensive synthesis and compilation of all the findings and proposals for new storage solutions at BAS, which will encourage circular material flows through better labelling, collective cleanup sessions for the common good, designing for dissassembly and a new (+hacked) industrial storage system in the main hall.Compiled and written solely by me, based on collective research and explorations&#38;nbsp;
